How do I make an Islamic will in Calgary?
The same way as anywhere in Alberta — and that is the point worth understanding. There is no Calgary will law. Wills are provincial, so the rules that decide whether your will is valid are Alberta’s. What is genuinely local is everything around the will: which mosques here can perform a janazah, where they bury, and what it costs.
- Work out the shares. The faraid calculator gives every heir’s fraction under the school you follow, with a written report you can hand to a drafter.
- Meet Alberta’s formalities. This is the part that decides whether the document works at all — valid (the Alberta formalities in full).
- Check your beneficiary designations. An RRSP, a TFSA or a life policy with a named beneficiary may pass outside the estate under Canadian law — whether it also sits outside the tarikah is disputed among contemporary scholars, so do not assume it escapes the shares.
- Have it drafted. The Registry does not draft wills. Treadstone Law, an independent Ontario firm, handles the drafting side.
- Record where it is kept — free, and it is what lets your executor find it.
Why there is no Calgary will law
Municipalities have no jurisdiction over wills or estates. Under s. 92(13) of the Constitution Act, 1867 that is provincial. Any page promising a “Calgary Islamic will” is selling you a Alberta will.

Burial grounds in Calgary
Muslim Cemetery of Calgary — an entirely Muslim cemetery, about 67 acres, plots available. Operated by the Muslim Council of Calgary, which states it 'operates Calgary's only Muslim cemetery'. MCC's page states the site is 'Spread over an area of 67 acres, this land was purchased in 1983' and that over 90% remains available. Physically located in Cochrane, just NW of Calgary, but serves the Calgary Muslim community. Funeral coordination contacts published: Br. Najah Hage (403) 615-9994, Br. Zuhair Osman (403) 651-7243, MCC office (403) 219-0991. A doctor's report or equivalent report from the relevant authorities must be provided. Funeral services themselves are normally held at the Akram Jomaa Islamic Center or the SW Masjid.

Akram Jomaa Islamic Centre
The centre's about page records that 'A committee in 1986 was formed called the "East Calgary Masjid Committee"' and that the centre 'was established in 1992', operating 'under the Muslim Community Foundation of Calgary charitable organization'. It describes itself as 'the largest Islamic Centre in Western Canada', says it 'caters to over 25,000 Muslims in the Calgary Northeast vicinity', and states that 'Over 2,500 Muslim men and women attend the weekly Friday prayer'. CRA's Charities Listing records MUSLIM COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF CALGARY, BN 140621186RR0001, as Registered with an effective date of status of 1991-01-01 — a year before the centre itself opened, and five years after the founding committee was formed. The foundation's CRA mailing address (225 28 St SE) is not the mosque's own address, since the foundation operates more than one site.

Al-Amal Academy
The academy's own about page says it was 'FOUNDED IN 2020' and describes itself as 'a fully accredited, full-time Islamic school for grades K-9 in Calgary, Alberta. Operated by Prairie Land Public School Division in partnership with the Pen and Paper Foundation'. Its homepage claims '50,000+ Sq Ft Premises', 'Over 400 Families Served' and '1st Full-Time Islamic School in Calgary NW', and its about page adds '30+ GRADE 9 GRADUATES'. CRA lists an Al-Amal Education Foundation (788126548RR0001) at 140 - 9 Royal Vista Dr NW, Calgary - the academy's own address - but its registration status is REVOKED (Failure to File), effective 2024-07-20. No CRA registration could be found for the Pen and Paper Foundation under that name.
Listed services: full-time accredited K-9 Islamic day school following the Alberta Program of Studies, Islamic Studies, Qur'an and Tahfeez memorization programs, Arabic Language Department, 'focused on Quranic Arabic as a language offering', physical education at least three times weekly and competitive after-school sports teams, athletics and clubs, Online Academy and 2 more.
Al-Salam Centre (MAC Calgary)
MAC's own facility page states: 'By the Grace and Will of Allah and the generous support of the community, MAC Calgary purchased Al-Salam Centre in September 2016. The center is located in the lively and well-served NW Calgary community of Ranchlands.' The centre has no charity registration of its own; the number recorded is the parent body's - MUSLIM ASSOCIATION OF CANADA, 880495163RR0001, registered effective 1999-01-01, Mississauga ON - seventeen years before this centre was bought. Al-Salam runs Friday prayers at three separate venues, which is a measure of how far it has outgrown the building.

Baitun Nur Mosque
Baitun Nur Mosque's cornerstone was laid in 2005 and the mosque was officially opened on July 5, 2008, by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community's fifth Khalifa, Mirza Masroor Ahmad, with about 5,000 people in attendance including Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Built at a self-funded cost of roughly C$15 million (about C$8 million raised from Calgary's ~3,000 local Ahmadi Muslims), it was, as of 2008, the largest mosque in Canada, with roughly 4,500 sq m (48,000 sq ft) of interior space. It operates under the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, whose Canadian charitable body (Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at Canada Inc.) is CRA-registered effective 1969.
Downtown Musalla
The Downtown Musalla occupies the second floor of the Burns Building at 8th Avenue and Macleod Trail SE in Calgary, across from City Hall, and is listed among Calgary's downtown prayer locations as offering daily prayers, the Friday prayer and Taraweeh. A separate Friday-only prayer location operates in the basement of Central United Church at 131 7th Avenue SW. No charitable registration was found for either.

Islamic Association of North West Calgary (IANWC)
Islamic Association of North West Calgary (IANWC) offers wedding/nikah services and support for those taking the shahada. For funeral services, its own site refers inquiries to yycmuslims.ca rather than describing an in-house janazah facility, suggesting it coordinates through a citywide Calgary Muslim funeral-support channel rather than operating one itself.

Islamic Center of South Calgary
Islamic Center of South Calgary (ICSC) began in 2004 as the South Musallah Society, operating from a small rented facility in a Queensland strip mall that held only about 85 people. As Calgary's Muslim population grew, the community built a larger space, now operating as the ICSC Legacy Musallah, offering daily and Friday prayers, Eid congregations, youth programming, halaqas, and Quranic/Islamic education.

SW Masjid (Calgary Islamic Centre SW)
Calgary Islamic Centre SW (SW Masjid) aims to "support and uplift both Muslims and the broader Calgary community" through religious, educational, and social programs. Its own services menu lists marriage, funeral, family-counselling, and ruqya services, and it is named as a funeral-prayer venue for the Muslim Council of Calgary's cemetery operation.
