Begin with your school of thought
The four Sunni schools agree on most of a normal estate and differ in a handful of configurations. Choosing yours first lets every step that follows — and your report — speak with one voice.
Your relationship to the deceased
This shapes how your report is written — it doesn’t change the arithmetic. If you’re planning ahead for your own estate, that’s an option too.
The estate
Shares are calculated on the net estate — what remains after funeral costs, debts and any bequest.
The deceased and their spouse
A husband and a wife take different shares, so we need to know which applies.
Children and grandchildren
Count only those who survived the deceased. Grandchildren through a son can inherit; grandchildren through a daughter are treated differently and fall outside this calculator.
Parents and grandparents
Parents almost always inherit under faraid — and almost never under Canadian intestacy.
Brothers and sisters
Siblings inherit only in some configurations — but their number can change the mother's share even when they inherit nothing themselves.
Your report is ready
The calculation is complete. Tell us where to send it and we’ll open the full report on screen now — every heir’s share in dollars, the basis for each one, and the notes that apply to your family — and email you a copy to keep.
Please enter a valid email address so we can send your copy.
Free. We email the report and nothing else unless you ask. Your family details are included in that email so you have a record — they are not stored on our servers.

Every term used in your report has a page behind it — free, with the Canadian legal position and the four schools compared.
