In Islamic law

Islamic practice is to bury quickly, ideally within a day. Debts and funeral expenses are settled from the estate before any bequest or inheritance is distributed.

In Canadian law

Speed collides with Canadian administrative reality: a death certificate, burial permit and funeral director are all required, and banks generally freeze accounts on notice of death. Families should know that funeral costs can usually be paid from the deceased's account before probate — most institutions release funds for this specific purpose.

Across the madhahib

We have not yet researched whether the four Sunni schools differ on this term, so we are not going to tell you either way. Where a specific case turns on it, ask a qualified scholar rather than relying on a general summary.
