In Islamic law

The practical gate between death and janazah. Knowing the sequence in advance is what allows a same-day or next-day burial.

In Canadian law

Issued once the death is registered. A funeral director normally obtains it, and no burial can proceed without it.

Across the madhahib

We have not yet researched whether the four Sunni schools differ on this term, so we are not going to tell you either way. Where a specific case turns on it, ask a qualified scholar rather than relying on a general summary.
