In Islamic law

Distinct from hadanah. The wali manages a minor's property until majority and must act in the child's interest; the classical order generally begins with the father and his appointee.

In Canadian law

Corresponds to guardianship of property, which in most provinces requires a court appointment or a properly drafted trust in the will.

Across the madhahib

We have not yet researched whether the four Sunni schools differ on this term, so we are not going to tell you either way. Where a specific case turns on it, ask a qualified scholar rather than relying on a general summary.
