Ontario's term for the executor — the person legally responsible for administering an estate.
In Islamic law
The closest concept is the wasi — the person appointed to carry out the wasiyyah and settle the deceased's affairs. Both roles are fiduciary in character.
In Canadian law
An estate trustee gathers assets, pays debts and taxes, and distributes what remains. The role carries personal liability: distributing to the wrong people, or before debts are settled, can leave the trustee personally answerable. Courts also require an affidavit of diligent search for a will before appointing a trustee where none has been found.
We have not yet researched whether the four Sunni schools differ on this term, so we are not going to tell you either way. Where a specific case turns on it, ask a qualified scholar rather than relying on a general summary.
