In Islamic law

A cost of administration, and therefore payable from the estate before distribution — comparable in treatment to debts and funeral expenses.

In Canadian law

Nil on the first $50,000, then roughly $15 per $1,000 of value above that. Assets passing by designation or survivorship are outside the calculation, which is why probate planning often focuses on them.
