Halifax is the clearest example in Canada of the Muslim funeral being run as a community service rather than a business. Two organisations handle almost all Muslim funerals in Halifax Regional Municipality, and they price very differently. The Islamic Association of Nova Scotia (IANS, the Dartmouth Mosque) states outright that it does not charge for its burial services and instead asks the family for a one-time donation to cover what it pays out to outside agencies. The Nova Scotia Islamic Community Centre (NSICC, Kearney Lake Masjid) publishes a flat figure: 'The cost associated with the Funeral services including Ghusl is CAD $3500 only.' Neither price includes transporting the body, which families must arrange separately through a funeral home. There is no separately published cemetery plot price for the Halifax Muslim Cemetery.

What we could not confirm

Published so you know where the numbers stop:

  • No published cemetery plot price for the Halifax Muslim Cemetery. Needs a phone call to IANS (902) 469-9490 or NSICC.
  • No published body transfer/removal price. D&D Funeral Removal Services (902-865-6544) would need to be called.
  • The IANS expected donation of 'roughly close to $4000' is third-party and undated. Confirm directly with IANS before publishing any number.
  • Nova Scotia death certificate fees ($33 / $39.90) come from a secondary bereavement guide, not a government fee page. Verify on novascotia.ca.
  • Whether the $3,500 NSICC figure includes the grave itself is ambiguous on the page - it says the cost is for 'Funeral services including Ghusl' and separately names the cemetery. Confirm by phone.
  • No headstone pricing (DeMone Monuments partnership with IANS publishes nothing).
  • The effective date of the NSICC $3,500 figure is not shown anywhere on the page.
