This record previously held no website because the Manitoba Islamic Association's directory links winnipegcentralmosque.org, which does not resolve and has never been captured by the Internet Archive. The mosque's actual site is www.winnipegmosque.org and it is current (it renders today's date and live prayer times). Its footer confirms the address and phone already held here - 715 Ellice Ave, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3G 0B3 and (204) 783-6797 - so the phone is now verified from the organisation's own site rather than from a third-party listing. JANAZAH, FROM THE MASJID'S OWN FUNERAL PAGE: it draws an explicit split. 'For Burial Services (washing, shrouding and burial), please contact the Manitoba Islamic Association (MIA)' and 'For Janazah Services (Funeral Prayer) at the Winnipeg Central Mosque, please contact Br. Idris Knapp at (204) 783-6797'. About Winnipeg Central Mosque
WCM's own history page is unusually detailed. Before 2004 the only mosque in Winnipeg was in South St Vital, and downtown Muslims prayed Jumaa at the Health Sciences Centre, the University of Winnipeg and the Pakistani Centre on Ross Avenue, 'getting very crowded' with 'often no room for women and children'. Dr. Mujibur Rahman - a local physician, former Manitoba Islamic Association president and trustee and a founder of Al-Hijra Islamic School - proposed a downtown mosque; MIA declined, being 'heavily preoccupied with the Waverley Mosque', so Dr. Rahman, his daughter Dr. Jennifer Rahman, and Mr. Farhad Sultanpour and his wife Glenda Lagadi raised the funds themselves and 'purchased 715 Ellice Avenue and the adjacent parking lots on March 2004 in the name of the newly formed corporation, "Winnipeg Central Mosque Inc."' The building had been the 'Happy Vineyard' and the 'Bamboo Bar and Grill', vacant two years and 'drawing crime to the area'; from March to October 2004 volunteers dismantled two bars, sold the restaurant equipment, and repainted and refloored throughout, praying 'on temporary cardboard' in the meantime. WCM opened in October 2004 in time for Ramadan, with an official open house on 14 November 2004. It has 'no full-time imam' - 'Various respected and educated members of the community lead Jumaa prayers.' CRA registered Winnipeg Central Mosque Inc. under BN 870224508RR0002 effective 2021-11-08, seventeen years after the mosque opened; an earlier account on the same business number (RR0001, dated 2020-02-20) carries no registered status.
