About Salam Masjid
Salam Masjid occupies the former St. Giles Presbyterian Church at the southwest corner of Burrows Avenue and Charles Street, a municipally designated historic site. The dark red brick and Tyndall stone building was designed by Winnipeg architect Charles Saunders Bridgman, its foundation and basement built in 1906 and the Gothic Revival superstructure — with a 75-foot bell tower and a horseshoe gallery seating about 1,100 — completed in 1908. It became St. Giles United Church after church union in 1925, was sold in 1973 to the Elmwood Bethel Mennonite Church and in 1997 to the Bethlehem Aboriginal Fellowship. In 2015 the Baptist Union of Western Canada asked the City of Winnipeg to lift the heritage designation so the building could be demolished; the city did not, and by a 2018 site visit the building was in use as Salam Masjid.
