About Manitoba Islamic Association (Winnipeg Grand Mosque)

MIA was formally incorporated in November 1969 to serve what was then a community of about 25 predominantly Indo-Pakistani families in Winnipeg; CRA registered MANITOBA ISLAMIC ASSOCIATION INC. (107660367RR0001) effective 1969-11-27 at 2445 Waverley St - the Grand Mosque's own address - in the same month. It built Manitoba's first mosque on Hazelwood Avenue in St Vital, which opened on 25 September 1976 at a cost of nearly $116,000 raised through community dinners, Folklorama, bake sales and an appeal to leaders of Muslim-majority countries; it was renamed Pioneer Mosque at its 40th anniversary in 2016. The MIA states that it 'owns and operates, on behalf of the Muslim community, two mosques and community centres in Winnipeg: Pioneer Mosque, the historical first mosque in Manitoba at 247 Hazelwood Ave, and the Winnipeg Grand Mosque and Community Centre, at 2445 Waverley St', plus satellite musallahs in Winkler and Steinbach.
