About Waterloo Masjid

Waterloo Masjid describes itself as 'the only Islamic center in Waterloo' and says it 'was established in the early 1980s when it became a fully-licensed religious corporation under Canadian law'; its homepage says it has been 'serving the community since early 1980s'. CRA's Charities Listing, however, records the operating charity — MUSLIM SOCIETY OF WATERLOO AND WELLINGTON COUNTIES, BN 107756694RR0001, at the mosque's own address of 213 Erb St W — as Registered with an effective date of status of 1976-01-01, several years before the date the mosque itself gives. The masjid's own project summary documents a long expansion effort: an adjacent property was bought in 2015 for $575,000 to add parking and enable a gymnasium; that first application failed over a shortfall of 10-11 parking spaces; the house was later demolished after break-ins, a building permit for the parking expansion was issued in 2021, and engineering works were signed off in late 2024/early 2025. Since late 2024 the masjid has been pursuing a two-storey vertical expansion — an expanded sisters' entrance, main-floor wudu and washrooms, offices, classrooms and a multi-purpose hall, and a gymnasium above — which as of 2026 is still in the City of Waterloo site-plan process.
