About Downtown Mosque (Sheikh Deedat Centre)
Sheikh Deedat Centre Inc. was incorporated federally under the Canada Corporations Act Part II on 13 August 2002, with its registered office at 100 Bond Street, Toronto, and Steve Rockwell, Mohammed Ahmed and Mohammed Maniar as directors. It was named for the South African da'wah figure Ahmed Deedat, whom founder Steve Rockwell (Mohamed Twahir) took as a mentor around 1994. For roughly a decade it was the only fixed five-times-daily prayer location in downtown Toronto, running out of a modest second-floor room above a halal restaurant and serving take-away iftar meals in Ramadan. Corporations Canada dissolved the corporation on 25 June 2015 for failure to file annual returns; Rockwell died on 2 May 2020; and the building at 100 Bond Street was demolished between May and June 2026 for a Toronto Metropolitan University student residence.
