About Scarborough Muslim Association (Jame Abu Bakr Siddique Masjid)

SMA's own history page records that 'By the late 1970s a large number of Muslims had migrated and settled in the east part of Toronto which is known as Scarborough', that in the early 1980s 'there was no permanent Masjid facility in Scarborough', and that 'the Muslims in Scarborough formed a non-profit organization in 1981 with the sole purpose of establishing a permanent Masjid and Madrasah'. The association first rented a hall; 'in 1992, SMA purchased land and a building at a cost of $3 million Canadian dollars, almost all paid for, by donations from the local Muslim community', renovating it into the present masjid and madrasah. CRA registered SCARBOROUGH MUSLIM ASSOCIATION (889756441RR0001) effective 1985-01-01 at 2665 Lawrence Ave E - the masjid's own address - four years after the association formed and seven before it bought the building. The association states that over 100,000 Muslims now live in Scarborough.
