The mosque's about page states: 'Hamilton Downtown Mosque is a vibrant Canadian religious non-for profit institution that started operation in 1992 and was established as a charity on March 5th, 1997. It is offering a variety of essential services to more than 10,000 Canadian citizens and residents of the Muslim community in the central Hamilton area.' CRA's Charities Listing records Hamilton Downtown Mosque, BN 871851366RR0001, at 221 York Blvd Hamilton — the mosque's own address — as Registered with an effective date of status of 1998-09-01. That is about eighteen months later than the charity date the mosque itself gives; both are recorded here, since the mosque's 5 March 1997 date is a precise claim and the CRA date is the effective date of registered status. The mosque has since completed a new mosque building, hall washrooms, a kitchen, entrances and minarets, and a youth centre, and lists an elementary school expansion as in progress.
