Founded 1938, Al Rashid is the oldest mosque in Canada and the anchor of the Al Rashid Foundation of Canada. Funerals for the whole city run through here: the Islamic Funeral Society (IFS), established 1992, 'comprises all the Mosques in Edmonton who elect an executive board' and 'delegated the Canadian Islamic Centre (Al Rashid Mosque) to take care of all funeral services'. IFS is a not-for-profit - 'no one individual or entity profits from the operation of the society'. The published fee table bills a line called 'Funeral Home Charges (Al Rashid Mosque)', i.e. the mosque itself acts as the funeral home, and its admin line explicitly covers 'Death Registry, Burial Permit, Transportation & Supplies' - so an on-site mortuary function and transport are recorded as confirmed. Ghusl, kafan, cold storage and separate women's washing facilities are still nowhere described in words on the site, so those stay unconfirmed rather than assumed - a family needing to know should call. NOTE for families: IFS membership has been closed since 2014, so the discounted member rate is not obtainable and the $7,000 total is the realistic figure. The mosque campus also hosts the Imam Al Shatibi Quran Institute, Edmonton Islamic Academy, Edmonton Islamic Daycare & Pre-school and the ARCA banquet facility.

About Al Rashid Mosque (Canadian Islamic Centre)

Al Rashid is the first purpose-built mosque in Canada. The foundation's own story page records that 'On December 12, 1938, that dream became tangible. The doors of Al Rashid Mosque opened for the first time as the first purpose-built mosque in Canada and one of the earliest in North America', built through a community effort led by Hilwie Hamdon. The Arabian Muslim Association followed in 1941 as 'the first formal organization representing Edmonton's Muslim community'; the original building was moved in 1946 to make way for the expansion of Victoria High School, and in 1992 was 'preserved and relocated to Fort Edmonton Park', where it stands as a heritage site. The present mosque opened in 1982 once the local Muslim population 'exceeded 20,000', 'establishing Al Rashid as the Mother Mosque of Canada'. CRA registered the Arabian Muslim Association as a charity effective 1994-07-18 at 13070 113 Street NW - 56 years after the mosque opened, the largest founding-to-registration gap in this set.
