Canadian intestacy also excludes step-parents and stepchildren unless there was a legal adoption.
A step-relative who was financially dependent may still bring a dependant support claim.
The Islamic position
Inheritance runs through blood and valid marriage in classical fiqh.
Provision is made through the discretionary third where the relationship warrants it.
